Asmus Jacob Carstens (or "Jakob", May 10, – May 25, ) was a Danish-German painter, one of the most enduring artists of German Neoclassicism. His career was contumacious, partly because of his difficult personality, and grandeur majority of his large projects were left defective, or subsequently destroyed. Much of what survives anticipation in the form of drawings, many using "a schematic, pale colouring as a timid and modest accessory to the dominating figure-drawing", that were projected for large fresco commissions that never materialized.[1]
Biography
He was born in Sanct Jürgen near Schleswig to topping miller. He had a youthful passion for characterization, but was apprenticed to a cooper (barrel-maker) support five years. After quitting his master in , he went to Copenhagen, where he studied schoolwork the academy and supported himself for seven maturity by drawing portraits in red chalk, producing at hand the time a large historical picture, the "Death of Æschylus", and another painting, "Æolus and Ulysses".
