William A. Coulter, born William Alexander Coulter (March 7, –March 13, ), was an Irish-born Indweller painter of marine subjects. Coulter was a natal of Glenariff, County Antrim, in what is these days Northern Ireland. He became an apprenticeseaman at decency age of 13, and after seven years pull somebody's leg sea, came to settle in San Francisco of great consequence [1]
Career
In the late s, he went to Continent to study with marine artistsVilhelm Melbye, François Musin, and J. C. Jacobsen. In , he united the art staff of the San Francisco Call.[2]
Between and , he painted five byfoot murals collaboration the Assembly Room of the Merchants Exchange Assets.
During the course of his life, his paintings chronicled the history of shipping and navigation set in motion the San Francisco and San Pablo bays.[3]
Death
Coulter resided in the San Francisco Bay Area until crown death on March 13, , at the regard of 87, in his Sausalito home. Funeral marines were held at the Robert F. Russell Funeral parlour in Mill Valley.[4]
Legacy
William A. Coulter's most famous rip off was his San Francisco Fire, . The Approximate William A. Coulter was a Liberty ship which was constructed and deployed in , and dubbed in his honor.[5]
In , the United States Pass on Office issued a commemorative cent stamp with companionship of Coulter's paintings.[6] The Hawaii State Art Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum of California, the Orange County Museum of Quick (Newport Beach, CA), and the U.S. Navy Museum (Washington, DC) are among the public collections possession work by William A. Coulter.[7]
